Recapture Your Youthful Smile With Botox®

Your smile is the reflection of the vitality within you, so when wrinkles and deep lines around your eyes make you look angry, tired, or older than you feel, they rob your smile of what it’s trying to convey.=

Here at Midtown Dental, we work with our Manhattan, New York, patients to maintain bright, white smiles that are backed by great oral health. But when age begins to etch lines in your skin, it can undo all your great dental efforts.

Here’s a look at how Botox can help you recapture that youthful grin.

The skin you’re in

Before we take a look at how Botox can enhance your smile, let’s review what happens to your face when you age, especially around your forehead, brows, and eyes. First, every time you smile, frown, or squint, dynamic wrinkles form around the upper half of your face that lend to your expression. However, as you age, these dynamic lines become etched into the landscape, lingering long after your expression is gone.

The reason this happens is twofold: First, as we mentioned, each time you form a facial expression, these lines become more entrenched, creating well-worn paths in your skin. Second, this effect is magnified as you age because your skin naturally begins to lose collagen and elastin, which are the building blocks for your skin. These two proteins are responsible for the tone and elasticity in the tissue, and when they begin to dissipate, your skin doesn’t bounce back as it once did.

Taking a timeout

Botox addresses moderate to severe forehead lines, brow lines, and crow’s feet by temporarily paralyzing the muscles responsible for contracting your skin. When we inject this neuromodulator into the muscle, it allows the lines on your face to relax, leaving a smooth surface more reminiscent of your youth.

Many of our patients are concerned that when they smile, showing off their great teeth, the effect is overshadowed by deep furrows along the brows that make them look angry, despite their bright, white smile. Botox allows your smile to shine through as the rightful center of attention, and not be offset by unintentional “angry” lines on the top half of your face.

And if you really want to showcase your smile, we can use dermal fillers around your mouth and cheeks to fill in deep lines and restore youthful volume to the lower half of your face.

The gummy smile

If you have a “gummy” smile — a smile that reveals too much of your gums — Botox may be able to help. Because Botox works on muscles, we can use it on those that are drawing your lips up too far, causing what’s known as an excessive gingival display (showing too much gum).

The process

We administer the Botox right in our office, and the treatments take only minutes, after which you’re free to go about your day. You may have some slight bruising at the site of the injections, but these are usually minimal and short-lived. Over the week following your treatment, you’ll see gradual improvements as your muscles release their hold, leaving line-free skin behind.

Botox injections typically last up to four months, at which point you simply return for a follow-up treatment.
